6b6t vs Microsoft, Mojang & GitHub: Over a Month With No Reply to Our DMCA

GitHub blocked AnarchyMod after a DMCA notice from Mojang. We wrote to GitHub four times, by email and through GitHub Support. In 40 days, not one person has answered.

GitHub has not answered us. Not once.

On 17 September 2026, GitHub blocked AnarchyMod after a DMCA notice from Mojang. A DMCA notice is a takedown request under US copyright law. Six and a half hours later, we sent GitHub a formal counter-notice. That is the official way to tell GitHub a takedown is wrong. Then a follow-up. Then another. Then a formal appeal. Four messages, on two channels, over 40 days.

Not one person at GitHub has replied.

GitHub Support ticket 4888487, a formal demand for action on our counter-notice, marked Open with 1 comment, opened by qbasty
Our appeal on GitHub Support on 27 October 2026. Still open. The only comment on it is ours.

GitHub belongs to Microsoft. Mojang belongs to Microsoft. We do not believe this silence is an accident.

What Did Mojang's DMCA Notice Claim About AnarchyMod?

In July, Mojang blacklisted 6b6t because we refused to add rules. 2b2t added rules and was left alone. We refused, and got blacklisted. It did not work. Players installed AnarchyMod, our free mod that skips the blacklist, and kept playing. A month later, on 14 August, we set a new record of over 1,155 players online.

So Mojang came back for the mod.

On 17 September, GitHub blocked the AnarchyMod repository, the mod's page and code on GitHub, and 14 copies that other players had made. The DMCA notice was filed by a Microsoft employee, for "Mojang AB, a subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation". It swore, under penalty of perjury, that "The entire repository is infringing." Lying in a sworn statement like that is a crime.

That is false. AnarchyMod contains no Minecraft code and no Minecraft art. Its code is public on Kian Bröse's site. Anyone can check it.

Mojang's own notice even says what this is really about. It complains that the mod's purpose "is to bypass restrictions implemented by Mojang for the server 6b6t". That is the blacklist. It has nothing to do with copyright.

raincoates, who has covered every round of this fight, put it best:

The request being sent at all is an admission that Mojang has failed to stop 6b6t.

raincoates explained the takedown the day it happened, in "Mojang's DMCA Against 6b6t Just Got Weird".

What Did We Send GitHub After the DMCA Takedown?

A formal counter-notice, two follow-ups and a formal appeal:

  1. 17 September, by email: our DMCA counter-notice. Signed, under penalty of perjury, with every statement the law asks for. GitHub's system opened ticket #4769038 and sent an automatic receipt.
  2. 7 October, by email: three simple questions. Was our counter-notice accepted? Is anything missing? Did Mojang go to court?
  3. 15 October, by email: the same questions in more detail, with a request for an answer by 20 October.
  4. 21 October, through GitHub Support: a formal appeal, ticket #4888487, with all our earlier emails attached and a request for an answer by 23 October.

GitHub's own email on 17 September told us we had "the right to file a counter notice and have the repository reinstated." We used that right the same day.

More than a month has passed. I require a decision and an explanation of the basis for continuing to disable my repository.
Our appeal to GitHub, 21 October 2026

Has GitHub Answered Our DMCA Counter-Notice?

No.

Not by email. Not on GitHub Support. Not once. The only message GitHub has sent us since the takedown is the automatic receipt.

GitHub has not told us if our counter-notice is complete. It has not told us if it went to Mojang. It has not told us why the repository is still blocked. Both deadlines, 20 October and 23 October, passed in silence. The appeal ticket is still marked Open, with one comment: ours.

Timeline from 17 September to 27 October 2026 of 6b6t's counter-notice, two follow-ups and an appeal to GitHub, none of them answered
40 days, four messages, two missed deadlines and zero human replies from GitHub. All times UTC.

On the night of the takedown, Kian Bröse put the mod's code on his own server and wrote that it would stay there "until GitHub reinstates it within a few days". raincoates said the same thing in his video:

if Mojang doesn't counter-sue 6b6t, then the repo will be restored.
raincoates, "Mojang's DMCA Against 6b6t Just Got Weird"

Mojang never took us to court. Nobody has ever sued 6b6t. The repository is still blocked. That was 40 days ago.

6b6t is a Minecraft server. We answer our players' emails within a few days. GitHub belongs to Microsoft, a company worth almost $4 trillion, and it cannot answer one counter-notice in 40 days.

Is GitHub Allowed to Ignore a DMCA Counter-Notice?

No.

We are in the European Union, so the EU's Digital Services Act protects us. GitHub already follows this law. It sends the EU its user numbers and its moderation decisions. Here is what the law says, in plain words:

  • Article 12: users must be able to reach the platform quickly and get a real answer. The contact "shall not solely rely on automated tools".
  • Article 14: it must use its rules fairly and with care, and respect users' rights, "such as the freedom of expression".
  • Article 17: when it blocks your content, it must tell you exactly why, and which law or rule it used. The law calls this "a clear and specific statement of reasons".
  • Article 20: it must deal with complaints quickly and fairly, and send back a decision with reasons "without undue delay".
  • Article 20 again: a person must make that decision, "not solely on the basis of automated means". A machine is not enough.

In 40 days, the only answer we got came from a machine. That is not a reasoned decision. It is not a decision at all.

The same law gives every user in the EU two more rights. Article 53: the right to complain to the national regulator. Article 54: the right "to seek ... compensation" for any damage caused by a platform that breaks these rules.

EU law also says Mojang's claim was wrong from the start. The EU's Software Directive says:

Ideas and principles which underlie any element of a computer program, including those which underlie its interfaces, are not protected by copyright under this Directive.
Directive 2009/24/EC, Article 1(2)

In plain words, nobody owns the ideas behind how a program works, or how other programs connect to it.

In 2024, the EU's highest court ruled on a case called Sony v Datel. It was about software that changes how a game behaves while it runs. The court said the data such a program changes "does not fall within the protection" of copyright, as long as it cannot be used to copy the game. AnarchyMod works the same way. It copies nothing.

US law sets a clock too. To keep its legal protection, GitHub must send our counter-notice to Mojang promptly. It must then put the repository back within 10 to 14 business days, unless Mojang tells GitHub it has gone to court. If GitHub does not do this, it loses the legal protection the law gives it for the takedown.

That window closed on 7 October. Today GitHub is 13 business days past it, almost as long again as the whole window.

US law also punishes false takedowns. Anyone who "knowingly materially misrepresents" that something breaks copyright "shall be liable for any damages, including costs and attorneys' fees". In plain words, they pay for the harm and the lawyers. Mojang swore that "the entire repository is infringing". It is not.

GitHub's own rules say the same thing:

  • Its DMCA policy: "we will wait 10-14 days and then re-enable your content unless the copyright owner initiates a legal action against you before then."
  • Its counter-notice promise: it publishes "all complete and actionable counter notices". Ours has never been published.
  • Its appeal page: "All legitimate Appeals will be answered with a final decision."

We are not even asking GitHub to agree with us yet. We are asking it to answer.

The AnarchyMod repository on GitHub, still blocked. GitHub's own page says the owner can file a counter notice to have it reinstated. We did, on 17 September.

Does Microsoft Own Both GitHub and Mojang?

Yes.

Microsoft bought Mojang in November 2014 for $2.5 billion. It bought GitHub in October 2018 for $7.5 billion.

When Microsoft bought GitHub, it made a promise:

GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos and will operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries.
Microsoft, announcing the GitHub deal, 4 June 2018

In August 2025, GitHub's CEO announced he was leaving, and GitHub became part of Microsoft's CoreAI division. GitHub's own leadership page now lists a Microsoft executive first, and no CEO at all.

Microsoft filed the complaint. Microsoft runs the company that decides on it. And that company will not say a word.

This is not a fair process. It is rigged. Microsoft is the accuser, the judge and the jury.

We believe Microsoft is abusing its control of GitHub to protect Mojang. It is weaponizing the DMCA to censor a mod it never took to court.

Why Do We Believe Microsoft Is Behind GitHub's Silence?

Connect the dots.

GitHub rejected Mojang's main argument. Mojang claimed the mod breaks Minecraft's copy protection. GitHub's own note says it "did not find sufficient information to determine a valid anti-circumvention claim." In plain words, GitHub found no proof of it. It still blocked the whole project and every copy.

The copyright claim does not fit the mod. Mojang's notice lists copyrights "for artwork and character designs featured in the game". AnarchyMod contains no Minecraft art at all.

GitHub has stood up for developers before. In 2020, the RIAA, the American music industry group, had youtube-dl taken down. GitHub put it back 24 days later, pledged $1 million to a fund that defends developers, and promised to "err on the side of the developer."

GitHub answers other developers the next day. In 2020, the exam-monitoring company Proctorio had a developer's code taken off GitHub. The developer sent a counter-notice on 24 November. GitHub replied the next day: "We've notified the copyright holder of your DMCA counter notice." On 9 December, GitHub put the code back. It is all in a US court filing.

This time the complaint came from GitHub's own parent company. This time GitHub does not even reply.

Microsoft uses GitHub's DMCA process again and again. Since 2017, Mojang and Microsoft have filed at least 25 DMCA notices on GitHub against Minecraft projects. Some covered hundreds of repositories at once: 495 in March 2023, 389 in September 2026. Every one is in GitHub's public DMCA archive.

Silence is how Microsoft treats anarchy servers. Mojang blacklisted us in July without one email first, even though our contact address was on our website and in the game. Purity Vanilla, another anarchy server, says the same about its own block on 26 December 2025:

Mojang enforcement did not give any written warning or notice of the block
Purity Vanilla's blog, 14 January 2026

TheMisterEpic asked the obvious question in his video:

So why didn't Mojang contact them prior to blacklisting them?
TheMisterEpic, "Mojang Just BANNED Minecraft's BIGGEST Anarchy Server..."

Same owner. Same silence.

TheMisterEpic spoke with us before making "Mojang Just BANNED Minecraft's BIGGEST Anarchy Server...", which covers the July blacklist.

GitHub answers when it wants to. It published Mojang's notice the same day it arrived. It sent us an automatic receipt in 14 seconds. The only thing it will not do is answer the questions we asked.

Kian Bröse, who is leading a lawsuit against Mojang in Sweden and helped us write the counter-notice, said what everyone was thinking:

Mojang has historically relied on the fact that the people they target do not know their rights nor the law
Kian Bröse, on the 6b6t Discord, 17 September 2026

We know our rights. We used every one of them. GitHub has not answered a single one.

The Microsoft Support Desk in 6b6t's new lobby. It does not answer either.

What Are We Asking GitHub For?

A reply. Our appeal asks four things:

  1. Is our counter-notice complete? If not, tell us exactly what is missing.
  2. Did you send it to Mojang, and when?
  3. Has Mojang gone to court?
  4. If another GitHub rule keeps the repository blocked, name the rule and the part of AnarchyMod it applies to. If not, restore the repository.

Our appeal also put GitHub on notice:

I reserve all rights to seek regulatory review and pursue available civil remedies. Any further unexplained delay will form part of the record supporting those steps.
Our appeal to GitHub, 21 October 2026

Every day of silence is now part of that record.

Will 6b6t Back Down?

No.

Not for Mojang. Not for Microsoft. Not for GitHub.

Mojang blacklisted us, and we stayed online. Mojang took AnarchyMod off GitHub, and we kept releasing new versions. GitHub went silent, so we are telling the whole story in public.

If you prefer safe, Microsoft-approved Minecraft servers, 6b6t is not for you. If you believe in freedom, buckle up. You are now part of the server going against the biggest companies in the world, in the name of freedom.

We already have plans for whatever Microsoft tries next. We are not going anywhere.

No gameplay rules. No map reset. No queue. No surrender.

6b6t stays online. 6b6t stays anarchy. 6b6t is anarchy.

Who Can Join This Fight?

Everyone.

Lawyers, legal advisors, media and journalists: if you want to join this fight, write to us at [email protected]. We answer within a few days. Unlike GitHub.

Players: keep playing. Every player online on 6b6t is proof that Microsoft's blacklist failed.

Can You Still Download AnarchyMod While GitHub Blocks It?

Yes.

GitHub blocked the repository and 14 copies. It did not stop the mod. AnarchyMod is on 6b6t.org/mod, on CurseForge, and on our own mirror. AnarchyMod 1.5.0 came out on 26 October with support for Minecraft 26.3.

New to the mod? Here is how to install AnarchyMod. For the full background on the takedown, 2b2t.blog has Mojang's DMCA against AnarchyMod, explained.

Is 6b6t Still Online?

Yes.

Same world. No rules. No queue. Mojang blacklisted us in July and went after our mod in September. The server never went down. On 23 October we opened a new lobby, and on 26 October we updated to Minecraft 26.3.

How to Join 6b6t

Java: install AnarchyMod once, then connect to join.6b6t.org.
Bedrock: br.6b6t.org, port 19132. No mod needed.

We will update this post the day GitHub answers. We are not holding our breath.
