Bases are one of the best things you can do an anarchy server. They show off your building skills, the size of your dupe stash and how loyal other players are to you by not griefing in one go. It's a true representation of success. The older, more good looking and more popular the base, the better.
There are two key points to making sure your base is never destroyed. It always hurts to see old bases destroyed. It's always a huge loss.
1) Location
The location of the base is everything, and I'm not talking about choosing your biome or a beautiful island. It has to be far way from spawn, likely in the millions, far away from highways and no traces that could lead back to you. You have to destroy all portals.
Having your base destroyed because someone found it by mistake hurts more than having an insider destroy it. It means that you weren't careful and smart enough.
2) Members
Even with a good location, you need to have trusted members. It takes only one person to have months or years of progress destroyed. Do not invite randoms, take your time with inviting people. Find out when they joined, which clan they're in and what are their goals at the moment on the server. Voice chat with them on Discord to see what your gut tells you.
However, if you manage to build a trusted loyal team, the result can be beautiful. It's amazing what multiple players can do together in one day. Resources, time and possibilities are all stretched out and the only limit is your imagination.

It's important to stay abundant with the idea of bases. You can always build another one and you can always get a new idea. However, one thing that is hard to rebuild is your reputation. Once you grief, you stay a griefer for eternity. Be careful with your moves.
